It’s inventory week and we have been working long hours. Its Thursday and I haven’t had a day off since Wednesday of last week and I wouldn’t have a day off until this coming Saturday but I started throwing up this morning (just over worked and needing some rest I think as I’ve been nauseous and exhausted for days).
I called in sick and my manager texted me that I was to switch my day off with another coworker. I had specifically requested Saturday off prior to making the schedule and I reminded him that I wouldn’t be able to work Saturday and that was why I asked for it off. He said that the only day we could switch was Saturday if I can’t make it in today and that another coworker has already called in sick so another coworker had to miss an appointment because it was just the 2 of them who were able to work the registers.
Personally I don’t feel that his poor scheduling or shortage of staff should create consequences or an issue for me. I want to stick to my guns and not work Saturday. I also don’t want to go to work sick but I don’t know what to say or do.

Hey, that's a tough spot to be in for sure. On the one hand, I get why the boss is stressed about being short staffed. Inventory week is no joke. But like you said, that's not really your problem - you already had Saturday requested off way before all this.
I think the best thing is to just be really professional and clear about it. Maybe send your boss a text like "Hey, I'm still not feeling well and really need the day to rest up. As a reminder, I requested Saturday off in advance. I'm happy to find coverage for today if that helps, but won't be able to change my Saturday plans."
Keep it real matter-of-fact. Don't argue or get emotional - that'll just make it harder for them. And maybe offer to help find coverage as a nice gesture, so they know you're still trying to work with them. As long as you stick to your boundary about Saturday in a respectful way, they can't really get mad at you for standing your ground on something you were clear about from the start. Staying calm and professional is key here. You've got this!
So basically, unless you are willing to stand up for yourself and then suffer the consequences in regard to whatever happens... you suck it up.
I personally would claim sick leave, tell that changing the schedule is not necessary. Then start researching your companies HR policies... because the situation you are exampling sounds like a manager that doesn't give a shit.
Do you work in an Amazon Distribution Center? Because this is the shit that happens all the time in distribution centers. They will not fire you because they do not want to pay the unemployment, or risk legal exposure... but they will make your life miserable until you quit.
I work at a home and ranch store. I was hired on as a key holder. And after starting work became aware of the staff shortage for morning and afternoons. We have a surplus of high school students who come in after school. But we are lacking in morning availability.
If you really need the job, then suck it up. But either way you should find a way to communicate your concerns to your boss.
