Manager mad that I won’t come in on my day off. Should I bring this up to her or contact HR?

Since another employee has been requesting additional shifts, I've noticed that my manager is cutting my hours. However, my manager texted me and asked if I can fill in for that employee because they are not available anymore. I replied that I made plans on the days she scheduled me off. She seemed upset by my reply and has given me the more demanding/difficult shifts. Should I bring this up to her or contact HR?

I'm definitely planning to quit! The recent work schedule that came out from my manager shows me working one 8-hour day out of the six days available. This confirms my decision to follow people's advice of quitting to find better and I do genuinely believe that there is better out there. Appreciate everyone's input and thank you!

You have an option to find another job if you think you can do better somewhere else. And your employer has an option to find another employee if they think they can do better with someone else. With that in mind I think your best bet is to decide how much you want the job.

HR isn't your friend. They are part of your employer's company. Maximizing profits is part of their job. They are not mommy and daddy. So no, I would not go to HR to whine. That has the potential to make things worse. I would either find another job or figure out how to make your boss happier so you can get out of this cycle.

It's not easy to come back once you are on the bosses shit list, but it is possible if you work hard at it and have some frank conversations with them. You have to decide if that is worth it to you considering your other options.

But overall, I think your best option might be to find another job so you are in a stronger position to negotiate.

Meh, fk her. I wouldn't come in either. I have three and a half days. I did come in once because what was I doing? Sitting in a cheap suite. And i just started the job, decided to make a good impression. But if she asked me this time, nah.

You can. And yes there's laws about retaliation. But in practicality, it's something you'll probably have to grin and bear it. I know that sucks, but thats life. Sorry you have a shitty manager.

Take it up with your manager. Then if the manager still wants you to come in on your day off, go to HR.


In some jobs, chain of command is strictly enforced.


Chances are HR will ask if you spoke with your boss first. The other issues are HR getting angry for not talking to your boss first, then your boss getting angry with you, all for not following the chain of command, and then you might still have to come in on your day off, on top of being reprimanded.

HR isn’t there to protect you but the interest of the company. But you cannot be forced to work on your day off. They can kindly request you to come in and give you a lieu day off. But they can’t fire you for not coming in on your day off. It’s not insubordination. Arrangements can be done if the process was done properly for you to come in on your day off due to short staff. But seems like your manager has a pickle up her butt! If it doesn’t get resolved, start looking for another job

Companies are funny. They think because they give you a paycheck for work you perform they own your whole life and are entitled to your time.


You can try to use HR but it probably won’t help much. They’re just there to prevent the company from getting sued, not to help you.

EEOC rules:

If its a scheduled day off, then you don't have to answer they're calls or come in. If they retaliate by doing what you say she's doing bc of you not answering calls or coming in the you can turn her in to both HR and EEOC.

But you'd have to prove it. She can say that they're cutting hours to save money. Then you're S-O-L.

There is nothing to bring up with HR. The boss wanted you to work on your day off. If your plans are super important and have been planed for for weeks or months, then accept the responsibility of being an adult and go to work. If it becomes a habit to be called into work on your day off, then you have the option of finding another job. But you currently have absolutely nothing to take to HR. Your boss is making a completely reasonable request.

I would want my story and evidence before I ran to HR. But if you have a trusted line manager that is not her you could discuss it informally.

Document everything, shifts, hours, who is doing what, how she treats the other staff, how she treats you.

Makes it easier to demonstrate she's being unfair specifically to you. If you can do that, she's in hot water.
