at my current job a fellow employee quit because he felt he was being unpaid, he was unemployeed for a few months while looking for another job, before coming back to his old job where he is now getting paid less than before he left
to clarify he came back to work for the same company but not in the same position (role)
I once left a job on good terms to take another higher paying job. A few years later my circumstances changed and I considered going back to my old job. I applied and they offered to rehire me. I declined because I just couldnt go backwards. I kept sending out resumes and now have a job I truly love.

I have done that. Many years ago, I was part of a downsizing. My boss reluctantly let me go, wished me well, and gave me a very generous recommendation letter. I got a job at a competing company, and worked there for a few years. My former boss contacted me that there was an opening back at my original company, and I took it.
depends on why you resigned. Often times, when they say you're welcomed back, it usually means nobody else wants the job so its a hard position to fill or your contribution to the company was incredible enough that they would take you back in a heartbeat. Usually its not a good sign about a company if they tell their quitters that they can come back anytime. It likely indicates high turnover.
but if you quit a job because you didn't like it, the very same problems will come to haunt you once you go back.
I did after 4 years :D
to different department but still the same company

I have done this before. Not because I was pursuing a different job but because I was moving abroad for a time. It’s nice to know that you’re always welcome back to a job. It means they valued your work ethics
depends on WHY i resigned in the first place and pay
I would if my my boss said it to me. I miss my previous job. 😭
I would. Quite a few people have done that, and it's certainly better than sitting at home bored not making money. The keyword here though is "resigned"
Only if every other option were even more demoralizing.
The same job? No. You left it for a reason. For a higher position with higher pay? I'd consider it.
Hooray pay bills, I guess every employer is another employer
Depends on why I resigned. From my current job, yes.
Never , always forward never backwards
No. You left for a reason.
