Yes, but it's not a good idea. It's always better to look for a job while you are still working. Leaving first puts too much pressure to take a job that might not be right for you.

There are also managers who won't, or are reluctant to, hire someone who is not currently work. If you are currently working, they know that you are a good enough employee that your company keeps you on. They also know that you are less likely to be desperate and take any job offer - meaning you might turn around and leave as soon as something better comes along.

Overall it puts you in a worse bargaining position.

Having said all that, yes I've done it many times for various reasons. But I have a background that made it easy to get jobs. That's because I intentionally took jobs that gave me good experience over jobs that paid more. Good experience pays off in the long run.

When you’re currently employed it gives you a lot more leverage and negotiation power when finding a new opportunity.


Also, it makes you stand out from all other candidates that are currently unemployed.


As a department manager who has hired new personnel before, it always raises questions and suspicions when someone is unemployed and applying — the only exception being if they were a very recent college graduate.

what I would do is…have other side jobs…make extra money. Get other job offers… then move on.
nowadays…I hear more young people leaving jobs (with no backup plans) and leaving relationships with multiple other options ….

Depends on your personal finances, or if you don’t mind living in a tent for a while. But I’d recommend against staying at a terrible job any longer than you have to.

Obviously we all have to make a living, but don’t ever let capitalist society convince you that your life’s purpose is waste the majority of your time on this planet chasing currency and to be a hard worker. Nothing wrong with a little hard work from time to time, but don’t be a slave. Only so much we can do in a forced situation like this, but the point is to just keep shit in perspective. Don’t make yourself miserable to obtain possessions you probably don’t really need. I’m probably going grander than you’re looking for though, so to stay more inside the lines, I’d say tough the job out no longer than you need to, and be actively looking for something else. Life is too short to be miserable.

Most employers know you won't leave unless you do have another job this is why people don't ask for raises because all they could do is bluff. Best way to get a raise is be able to walk away right then and there when they say no or push the conversation off until next quarter.

I left a Manufacturing job with a great medium size company ALMOST under those circumstances, but had a pending offer from Boeing, in Long Beach. They took some asshole off of the manufacturing floor and made him my supervisor, and he was a real horses ass, I resigned on the spot, although it was risky, but could not work a day for this son of a bitch. So yes! I would.

I did when I was younger. I picked up and moved states without having a job lined out. Would I do this now. Fuck no. But when I was younger I had virtually no bills so I didn't even bat an eye about it.
