We DO try and watch that stuff on Charity Navigator. A lot has to do with the scope of the charity and its "pedigree" or foundation. We just quit donating to one specific charity and the head of it makes "only" $150-160K plus travel perks and stipends, chump change lately.
We do not donate to "mega-NPO's" such as Goodwill. Yes, they DO provide some sort of job for those considered "unemployable", (not my phrase). I did a spot check some of the 164 area stores/offices of Goodwill and the CEO of EACH branch typically made between $300k and $500k. At these rates, just the salaries of the head honchos/honchettes is somewhere above $50,000,000 (million) . And while the workers do have a job, most are typically minimum wage, and ALL of their merchandise IS free to the charity, so their stock costs are zero. We tend to support NPOs that are more "grass roots" organizations filling the holes that are traditionally left open by the bigguns.

Hell no!
Or at least they better make a very strong case for that CEO being that much better for the charity than a cheaper CEO.I don't know if a million-dollar CEO is worth it for a cause. But I have a lot more faith in a local charity. Local charities don't have million dollar CEOs. With local charities I don't know where ALL the money goes, but it's not to the CEO.

Sounds like the red cross. The CEO was busted riding in limos with hookers. Another guy said he donated to the red cross for decades. Then when a tornado struck and flattened his house, the red cross charged him for a cup of coffee. That was the end of his giving to charities.

It’s really sickening & unfortunately a lot of charities are a get rich scheme nowadays. As for me I do donate but there are only certain charities I donate to after I research.
I love when I go to the grocery store & the cashier asks me if I would like to donate to the local food bank & the first time I did was the last time I did. I pulled up the charity & the CEO makes $362,000 plus bonuses & all the people under that person makes 100k plus. Every time I go back to that store the cashiers ask I ask them do you know what the CEO makes a year & they tell me no & I tell them to go to the website, scroll down & click on the financial report link. As I said it’s sickening.
10 Reply 2.9K opinions shared on Education & Career topic. No, and this is the reason I do not give to any of them. They are all scams. I gave to a charity to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombers. A few weeks later I found out that people were defrauding the program and the person running it was hired out of the mayors office with a big 6 figure salary.

I do project Santa every year. I like to call myself a famous wrap star, because I am. People donate gifts for poor kids. Then the wrap stars spring into action. Then a gaggle of sheriff deputies
commandeer the city buses, fill them to the roof with gifts and go on their routes. That's the only charity I will do.

Maybe. If the charity does extremely good work, and the CEO successfully manages tens of millions of dollars in charitable contributions...
I suspect that there aren't many CEOs like that...

Too many have most of the money going to administrative and fund raising and not to actually helping people. Plus big fat salaries for all.

You can check out what a charity brings in, salaries of the CEO and officers, and how much is spent on fund raising, administrative, and how much goes to the people that they are supporting. @CharityNavigator.

I don't donate to charities. If I want to give money to a cause I go to the place directly. I wanted to help ukraine I went to ukraine I wanted to help Israel I went to Israel. I wanted to help the homeless population I bought food, clothes, talked to them to see why they were in the situation and if I could help directly. If so I djd

Difficult one. Some charities are large and complex, and it takes specialized skills to support the donation volume required to really move the dial for a cause. What you probably consider normal course for a charity is not what they actually do.
00 Reply 565 opinions shared on Education & Career topic. Are they making a million from the charity or other activities? The charity I donate to has a director that makes over a million at his regular job; but then doesn't get paid for the work at the charity.
10 ReplyIt would make me very hesitant to donate to that organization. If the CEO is asking people to give up their hard earned money. Then he should be able to give up his time for a reasonable compensation!
10 ReplyDepends on their overall impact. I wouldn't want the CEO taking home more than 1% a charity.
10 Reply535 opinions shared on Education & Career topic. I would def read up on articles about it. Like the Red Cross. I’m actually not sure if they turned it around but they had a horrid scandal of using 90% donations. That’s called profiteering.

Why not?
How do you know that a CEO with similar qualifications and ability isn't worth $10 million a year and that he isn't making a big sacrifice?
06 Reply- 10 mo
No one is worth that much. It's all greed and not being charitable.

That's absurd. You're a victim of envy.

You must love all these scammers that give charities a bad name. 🙄

If an employee has a market value of $10 million a year and they accept a position in a charitable organization for $1 million a year, that's a $9 million a year donation to that organization.
How much did you give them? - 10 mo
@RingOfFire Well, it would take me 50 years to donate enough to even pay 1/20 of that salary. So what's the point in donating? 🤔 You don't even get to take off donations on your taxes anymore because of the new standard deductions. At least I know that if I donate to a church it does a lot more good for my bucks.
- 10 mo
I'm not debating that. It's up to you who you want to donate to of if you want to donate at all.
I'm only saying that just because the CEO of an organization is getting compensation of $1m a year does not mean it is not appropriate or that the charity is not legitimate. Nor does it mean that the CEO is receiving unreasonable compensation.
Honestly it would depend on what kind of total budget the charity has. If it's over 100 times the CEOs salary I wouldn't have a problem

Not actively but if they run a shop that can turn me a profit I'll use it
00 Reply The CEO salary has nothing to do with my donations. I give according to the type of work various organizations do.

How hard does he work?
