How long do you attend school in your country?

In Aotearoa New Zealand, you start school at 5 years old either on/just past your birthday or if your birthday falls inbetween terms you start the term following your birthday.

Primary school is years 1-6

Intermediate school is years 7-8 (some schools this is integrated into primary school or high school)

And high school is years 9-13.

The school year starts early February and ends early-ish December. There is 4 terms consisting of 10-12 weeks with 2 week breaks (school holidays) between each term and about 6 weeks summer/Christmas holiday at the end of the year.

Typically the school day will start at 8:30- 9am and end at 3pm.

In high school you would have 5-6 classes a day. With a morning break and a lunch break. Not sure if it was the same for every other school but at mine everyone would have break times at the same time. Years 11-13 you earn what's called NCEA credits, you need a certain amount in order to pass that year level. Credits can be earned with a combination of internal assignments (in class) and external end of year exams.

Most schools are one level spread out with blocks of classrooms. Lockers aren't really a thing, we carried all our books around with us every day. Most schools have school uniforms.

In Mexico... pre-school is kind of optional, and you can go to a pre-school indeed, around age two or three (which is more like daycare) and there's also kindergarten required (aged 4 and 5)

and the compulsory basic education does start at age 6, till age 11... with primaria or elementary school, once you graduate from elementary/primaria you switch to secundaria

secundaria or middle/junior school is three years and that's ages 12 to 15 and it used to be the last stage of compulsory, basic education but is no longer the case

preparatoria or high school, is the last stage of basic education which is not compulsory in Mexico, and that's for ages 16 to 18, although you can also finish it in two years, so you can graduate at age 17, that's optional as well...

you mentioned one level schools, and we usually have those as well, and most of them look all the same, because the majority of the schools are public and run by the state, lockers have never been a thing here either, but you don't really need to carry a backpack around, as you usually get your classroom with your classmates being the same for the time being, and it is the teachers who move around to do their classes

uniforms are also mandatory till age 18... because of summers being relentlessly hot AF... the school year starts around September, and it would conclude around June

July and August are the break between years or grades, with few shorter vacations during holidays... and the classes are usually in the morning, from 7am till 1pm

and the afternoon block, from 1 to 8pm... as for graduation, there's a diploma you can get at the end of every school stage, with the grades going from 1 to a 10, and every decimal counts as well... 8.0 is considered the passing grade and the minimum required to enroll to a University

as a fun fact... education in Mexico can go all the way back to the times of the "Aztec Empire" where school was also mandatory for everyone... and there were two institutions... the telpochcalli, which was the "regular" school for every son of a mother to go to learn a trade to serve a purpose or you could become a warrior and there was also the calmecac which was the school for the nobility in which they would learn the arts, the sciences and all of the knowledge required to lead warfare...

a funnier fact about how learning was mandatory... if you didn't study and learned your lessons, you were sent to a secluded room in which they would burn hot spicy chiles and pretty much they pepper sprayed the soul of you till you learned your lessons, lmao

It's kind of similar here in India.

Schooling starts at roughly 3 years of age.

First 2-3 years is the preschool stage.

Then from age 5/6 junior school starts. There's no specific demarcation between junior school and high school, but you could say 15-16 years age marks the beginning of high school.

Schooling is from the age of 3 till 18. Then college.

Timings are similar. Most schools are morning schools. Start at 8/8:30am and end at 1/2pm. There are some that start at 10am and continue till 4pm. The yearly session depends on which board the school follows. Boards determine the scope of curriculum. Some boards have the session from April till March, some have it January to December, some from July till June. Majority of the schools don't have a locker 😂. You carry your own books. There's one recess everyday. Usually 30-40mins, for lunch. Apart from that it's usually 6-8 classes a day, all 30-40mins. There are no other breaks (apart from that one recess for lunch). There's usually one day a week with a games period.

The academic year has 2/3 assessments (varies from board to board). Projects/assignments etc. are there, but generally they aren't the only criteria to pass that class. It's a mix of those as well as written assessments. The cut off is usually a certain percentage, so even if you fail horribly with your assignments, as long as you get the sufficient grade in your written tests, you'll pass.

There are a lot of extra curricular activities throughout the year. Competitions, musicals, sports etc.

I didn't know there was intermediate school in NZ. Our countries are so close together that I thought the education system would be the same 🤔

Anyway in Western Australia it was:

-Kingergarten (age 4)
-Pre primary (age 5)
-Years 1-6 of primary school (age 6-11)
-Years 7-12 of highschool (ages 12-18)
-Followed by a TAFE certificate, university degree or apprenticeship

School days generally started at 8:30 and ended at 2:30 or 3. Other things to note are, we don't have home room classes, we wear school uniforms, and cafeteria food isn't served to us

too much *scool for you. we in u. s. have pre school required. start learning math addition subtraction before 1st grade.

elementary is 8 years age 6 to 14, called grades 1 to 8. end of 8 is graduation. short school days.

then 4 years high school similar to the optional 4 years in college. end of 12 is graduate not 13.

high school is 6 hours study. each day.

summer vacation in u. s. is almost double your 60 days summer break.

The US is very similar to New Zealand, except high school ends at grade 12. The school year starts at the end of summer and ends at the end of spring. Except for private schools, there are no uniforms, and the day is similar to New Zealand, around 8am to around 3pm.
