My coworkers wife told me to stop following him. What do I do?

I (f25) have a coworker (m50) that I am close with. We both worked at the same university and have a lot of the same friends, and at our new job, we hate the same people. We are "close" but we don't hangout outside of work, we don't contact each other after hours, I ask about him wife and kids at least once a week (if he doesn't bring them up first), etc. We don't flirt, just vent.

Today, a lady came up to me asking for a favor. She told me to stop following him around and that everyone could see what was going on and I knew it too. I was shocked because I had no idea who she was. But then it clicked and I couldn't say anything except that I was sorry.

What do I do now? Should I report it to hr or just leave it alone?

So I just talked to one of my coworkers who said she actually had to talk to the wife a couple of weeks ago. Apparently I've been on her radar for awhile because someone in the office got mad at her husband (my coworker) and started told her lies about me.

You should report it to HR, but not as a complaint. More for their awareness so if further problems come up, she can be banned from the campus. For your safety.

Look, there's nothing you can say or do to make women like this feel better about their insecurities. You're right to not talk or hang out with him outside of work. But she has no right to tell you to stay away from him at work. You're coworkers... But keep in mind that she'll take out her jealousy towards you, on her husband. So it's best to keep on the safer side with your interactions with him. As lame as that is, it's reality. And one day you'll be an aged women, with a man you want to keep away from young women. You'll understand it more then.
