Are you planning on going to college or getting into a trade?

Question

I did community college for a short time and while it was fun, it was a major rip off.

College is for doctors, lawyers and people who need connections early in life.

My life would be so much easier if I had went to welding school or got into carpentry.

Still would have started a business.

Ultimately you should do what you want to do. If you hate school and feel forced into college, then you may be spending thousands of dollars and end up dropping out. But there are certain careers that you must have a college education (i. e., medicine, nursing, engineering, education, social services, accounting, etc.) These professions all require a license, and you can't get one without going through a college program. Also, there is the advantage of having a well-rounded education that develops general knowledge and critical thinking skills.

For most people college is a good investment. For the 20% or so where trades or the military or family business is a good option they should take it despite the loss of a multiplier effect of having a college degree. It's just simply not for everyone!

No regret! That’s important. Use what you have and still have fun. I went to 3 college but dropped out. 3 majors. I could have gotten my own business with the money. I was not thinking clearly. If I went back the time I would not crazy about studying. I would enjoy my studying French in Paris and go from there.

I started a business. I have gone into detail many times on here, so in short: was making more in the summer before sophomore year at college that the degree I wanted would even pay me, so I quit and have not regretted it in the decade since.

I went to college and would have made more if I had stuck with being an electrician. Granted with chemistry I should have followed through and gotten a masters, as a bachelor's just makes me a more qualified lab tech in various cancer alleys across the US.

I did the trade route, but in the 1970/80's in the UK going to University for working class kids was a rarity, as I've moved through my career I've taken what professional qualifications I've needed through distance learning, and I had a 4 year career advantage over any of my contemporaries who had taken the University route and who still have to pick up the practical skills I’d learned in those 4 years.

If you have a career in mind that requires a college degree like Accountant or Nurse than it is worth it. If you major in sociology you will be disappointed. I saw a girl on TV last night whose parents paid 100K for her to major in Songwriting.

I went to college cuz I saw it as a social opportunity and all that but only the first year was really all that good for the socialization aspect.

That being said, I pretty much roughed it out the entire rest of the time I’ve been in college.

Would I do it again if I knew all it entailed? Probably not.

A job in the trades would’ve been a lot simpler to handle
