Ever since the very first day I worked for my old job in a museum, Christmas Eve was known as staff appreciation day. When I started, managers did this for me, and when I became a manager, I loved to do it for my staff. Essentially the management team (6 people) would come in for an hour early FOR FREE and open up the entire museum which was huge mind you, and then with our own time and money, we would make a homemade breakfast for roughly the 70 people there in the morning including housekeeping and maintenance, and some other side staff. Staff could just come in, sit down, enjoy the holiday tunes we'd be pumping out on blast and just enjoy a great breakfast. I have THE best memories of this day throughout the years, and the dance parties, karaoke, laughter, and joy.
On the last year I was there, we got an email letting us know that we were no longer allowed to do this because it was, and I quote, "not our job (as managers) to do the jobs of our employees." Suuupppeeerrr great way to boost the old morale there. Literally we did this one day of the entire year and by the way, invited the upper Admin to come (which they never did).

It sounds like the museum management missed an opportunity to foster a positive work environment and team spirit. I've witnessed similar situations where well-meaning initiatives were halted due to a rigid interpretation of roles. In my experience, fostering a culture of appreciation and camaraderie can significantly impact team morale and productivity. Sometimes, it takes a collective effort from staff to communicate the value of these traditions to management. A conversation highlighting the benefits of maintaining such events might help. Keeping morale high should be a priority for any successful organization.
