How would you promote a friend who needs a job to your boss?

I have a friend 5 just got laid off without warning or severance. I want to try and convince my employer to hire him, but honestly, I've been here for only 5 months. Should I just say that he's looking for the position and be honest or should I add in some embellishments? I've never had to do this for someone before
