I know for a fact that it doesn't. For most people success is either something they're born into or something they can never achieve regardless of how much they try. Only a very tiny minority of folk on the cusp get lucky enough to actually have their efforts make a difference to their lives.

Sure thing. Both my partner and I worked as hard as we could at uni. After 7 years, both awarded. PhD's. Now work together in very well paid jobs.
