If you went to college, what’s one thing a professor said that has stuck with you?

I had great professors throughout my college career, but one thing that has stuck with me to this day is one thing my humanities professor said. He said: “if you can’t explain something, you have no business talking about it.”

I was in Engineering, and the dean once said to me. "Tom, you're going to be a good engineer. You're lazy." I was shocked and asked him what he meant. "A good engineer doesn't invent something new all the time. He builds on what others have done. Call it lazy, but it's good engineering, and you're gonna be good at that, because that's what you do."

I remembered that during my career. Rarely did I do something totally new. I took what others had done, and modified it to satisfy what I was doing. I passed on that knowledge to others that I worked with.

My grad school professor in writing said something along the lines of "if your life has no problems then you're not really living it." It's a quote by Ryan Higa but he said it differently and better. I wish I could remember exactly what he said because it was deep.
