English Language Question - What is the plural of SERIES, and how do you know?

Series is one of those unusual English language words where the singular and plural are the same. This is called a "zero plural".

So, how can you tell if the word series is singular (one) or plural (many)?

If someone says that they are watching TV series, do you interpret that as them watching a specific series (like Dexter), or are they watching multiple different series (like Dexter, CSI, and others)?

Many (most?) nouns that are both plural and singular do have a different plural form. An example is grass and grasses. I think technically "serieses" is the plural of series. Apparently it is listed in some dictionaries that way. However, I doubt of I would use it that way since it sounds stupid.

I'm a hard core descriptionist rather than a prescriptionist. That means if a significant number of people use the language in a certain way, then it is automatic "correct". Further, I don't believe there is any such thing as "correct".

That means that the "correct" plural of series is whatever people use, which is series.

I'd interpret it as belonging to the same group. It's a group of things where the individual components follow each other. The word actually means a row of things You can make it 'more' plural by adding a number, e. g. six series.

Or should the singular be sery? As in armies becomes army.

Can't wait until someone seriously says it's Serieses.

I think most people would clarify by saying/writing several (or give a number) series.

Or it might be implicit e. g. what series do you watch.

I might say the data series show i. e. one data series or I might say data series show being potentially multiple data series.

Sheep is similarly singular and plural and we might give a number if not many but say a mob of sheep if it is a lot of sheep.

I think it is always clarified by other words.

Multiple different series, if there's no other context. Otherwise you'd say you're watching Dexter.

Fish is even more fun, it's its own plural and has a different plural form. All the fish in the sea, or the sea and little fishes. I don't know for sure, but I think I'd use fishes for a countable number (in a bowl, say), and fish for uncountable.

"Series" is the plural of "serial", but the use has been changed over time. "Car" was the abbreviation for "horseless carriage". It's just language development over time.

That is the plural as it is talking more than one (series). But it can be singular because a world series can also be "one".
