I didn't even know that was a thing until the first time I passed through New Jersey and the gas station attendant freaked out and I went to pump my own gas. When I was a kid I worked in my uncle's full service gas station. That was when gas station attendants pumped gas, washed the windows, and asked the customer if they wanted you to check the fluids and tire pressure.
All gas stations were like that at one time.

I haven't seen a full service gas station in years. They are all self serve now. You either insert a credit card at the pump or you go into the mini mart and they turn on the pump after you pay.

When I lived in New Jersey , they pumped my gas for me , but now I live in Pennsylvania and I had to learn how to pump gas my first time doing it here lol

Most gas stations here don't have an attendant. I think only Shell has one who helps sometimes and tries to convince people to their premium fuels.

The only state I know of where customers are not allowed to pump their own gas is New Jersey. Seems like an anachronism in 2025. But not a big deal for me as I'm hardly ever in New Jersey.
