If someone told you that they graduated with a 1.8 GPA in highschool, would that make you think they aren't intelligent?

The thoughts I'd run through...

• Yup, not very intelligent.
• Issues at home / with family.
• No ambition or direction in life.
• Mental health.
• Bad school system.
• Home schooled / cult culture.

The problem with a 1.8 GPA, basically a C- is that you've left the path to success in life early. You probably aren't college material. If you are accepted anywhere it's likely a community college. And once you step off the path it is hard to get back on the path. The earlier you leave the path and the longer you stay off it, the harder it becomes to find it again. You end up competing against people who are 5-10 years younger than you while you're trying to hold down a job and an adult life while trying to finish your education or build a resume from the bottom up.

You would not be able to graduate (at least from schools in my area) with anything less than a 2.0.

That being said, there are so many reasons students don't do well in school. I was witness to a lot of them working in education years ago.

-They hate school or feel like their talent isn't being showcased or invested in

-Mental illness

-Abuse in the home

-Family instability (parent in jail/parents always fighting/no stable home)

-Learning disability

-Lack of basic necessities (laptop/school supplies)

-Poverty/Food insecurity

-Their school was too advanced for their education level at the time

You can't just assume that a student wasn't intelligent. I would just do some basic asking to see why they felt they didn't do well in school rather than ever assume they were not intelligent.

I probably would to be honest lol But it would depend on their attendance.. If they missed a lot then that would explain why the low score but if they went most the time then.. Ehhhhh it's a more questionable IQ lol

I graduated from the gifted program and got way higher than 1.8. Also because I went to an elite high school, they automatically jack up your grade by 10% when you apply to university.
