I chose a course for my friend and now I feel used… am I overreacting?

I was going to choose an elective course where I already had access to the exam questions, but Ayşe insisted that we shouldn’t take it because the schedule didn’t fit hers (she works as a nurse). She kept telling me to take the same course as her. Since she’s my friend, I felt like I had to agree, so we chose another course.

It turns out that the professor of that course requires us to write an academic paper. I don’t know how to write one, and she has experience because she wrote one before with Melike. I told her a few times that I didn’t know how to do it and that maybe we should choose the other course, but she didn’t really insist or care much—she just said I could help her.

Today she called me, and in the background she was eating pasta with another friend, and she said, “We just used AI to do it, you can do the same.” That really upset me. I told her that I don’t know the terms you’re using, and since you’ve written one before, you at least know whether what you’re doing is correct or not.

Honestly, I didn’t like what they did at all. Because I chose this course for her, and then she acted like this. I don’t know… but it made me feel bad.

Im sorry you feel used. I dont think this is about the paper. I think you are going learn to write this paper and you are going to do really good on it because this matters to you.

I think the real lesson here is you sacrificed what you really wanted to do for a friend. When it came time for her to show you she had your back like you had hers, she let you down.

School isn't about papers and what they teach us, as much as how to create a world we want to live in. You choose this to learn and to improve yourself. And the hard parts over, now you just have a paper to learn to write, and a crappy friend to tell she is a crappy friend. 😉
