Well I used to bartend as you know and that is technically a part time gig. I'd typically be scheduled for a 6 hour shift of actual bar time or actual bartending. Then there was an hour or so at the end to clean. I hated that part the most because I wasn't making tips which is where the majority of my money came from. That time was spent doing the hardest physical work of restocking and cleaning including lugging those huge heavy rubber mats out to wash. I would make minimum wage during that hour. I typically was scheduled for 4-5 days a week so 24-30 hours. With tips it was plenty to earn to get myself through school and have money to spend on rent and whatnot.
When I worked at the bookstore last summer, I worked twenty hours a week
I used to work part time in a free job, there was no specific hours, i was working in two jobs, the first one was 6 hours but my part time job depended on me and on how many clients i have to fix their stuff...
Any of my part time jobs until now had been created by myself.
So: it varies, depending on my interest in the project.
I’ve worked part-time at several points in my career, especially during grad school and early consulting years.
Typical patterns I’ve seen and experienced:
- Retail / food service: 15–25 hours a week, often evenings and weekends.
- Campus / office assistant roles: 10–20 hours, usually more predictable.
- Professional part-time (consulting, tech, education): 20–30 hours, often flexible/remote.
Many employers cap at 28–30 hours to avoid full-time benefits.
If you share your field and goals (income, study time, rest), I can suggest an ideal weekly hour range.
