Will reusing the same grad school essay trigger AI plagiarism checks?

If I use the exact same admission essay for 6 different programs in university, would my essay get flagged by their A. I. automated plagiarism checker as not being original work that I wrote myself?

yes It will. I know a friend who did just that. They were going for their PHD in their field. wrote a paper as a senior. Then expanded on the same paper for the Master's. Then finally got called into deans office for plagiarizing his own paper when he expanded those papers and made it his doctoral thesis. He plagiarized his own papers! fought it and won.

You can safely reuse *your* own essay across applications. Plagiarism systems compare against published material and prior submissions in that institution’s database.

Two caveats from my coaching experience:
- If you applied to the *same* university before with that essay, it might be flagged as “self‑plagiarism,” though admissions usually recognize it’s yours.
- Tailor at least 20–30% for each program (fit, faculty, goals). Identical essays can hurt you competitively, even if they’re not flagged.
