Is it legit for students to use AI?

Question

This chart shows how the usage of ChatGPT drops off considerably when colleges, universities and high schools end their school year and are off for the summer, indicating that students are using AI (ChatGPT in particular) for their essays, homework, and take-home tests. What do you think about that? Is AI a legitimate thing to use in education? What ever happened to independent research and learning? Or maybe, teachers and professors are making things so difficult, students are forced to use AI?

All  personal  electronics should be banned in school. That includes computers, phones, calculators, etc. Obviously without those devices, students can't use AI either. The schools themselves can teach kids to use those devices, but it should be limited. The devices should be school devices, not individual devices. It's easy to say that kids need to learn such-and-such. With a finite amount of time for education, whenever you add something new to education, you have to take something away. So if kids are learning computers, or AI, then what do you take away? There is mounting evidence that all this technology is harming education, not helping. It's too much of a distraction and too unfocused.

Ai can be an amazing tool for self learning but i would bet that in this case its just being used for cheesing assignments. its the students lost in not taking the opportunity to lean something. we will see how that effect young adults entering the work place where Ai can't do the work for them. Much of whats learned in school is useless on the job but there are skills that are developed and having a broad knowledge base is not to surprisingly useful for other things.

AI is now part of our world so students should be taught how to use it. But they should not be allowed to sit back and let it write essays for them. Perhaps since gathering information is so easy these days they should get a higher workload and more testing to show they actually understand the paper they took 5 seconds to write.

Not if their goal is to actually learn how to DO something. My older daughter was the in the last high school class at her school to have a Manual Drafting course. Succeeding years all had CAD Drawing. There were so many times that she actually had to render something by hand in the years that followed, including a floor plan for her wedding, until CAD became a functional reality. Yes, now even I- with a Graphics degree from 51 years ago- will use automated graphics tools, but I at least know what is going on in that stupid computer, just rendering it faster than I could by hand.

I did a masters relatively recently and a substantial part of it was learning how to do research. You need to be able to cite sources etc etc.

Really AI is an anathema to academic study. It is plagiarism on steroids is how I would see it. I think AI could be part of research aspect of finding relevant papers. But even so that is knocking out a fair bit of the learning process.

They should not be using AI for anything, not even searching. They need to learn how to find the answers for themselves. They need to do the research, read the books, find the sources, everything that the students before them had to do.

If you use others to do your assignments (i. e. cheat) you are not learning. Why be in school if you refuse to think and learn? AI chat boxes may be useful to gather information, but if used to write a paper (i. e. do the students' thinking for them) it is glorified cheating, which students should be taught is unethical.

No but that is how they make good grades. The AI BOT gives them the answers. There are websites that they can access and get all of the answers for their homework.

I mean schools tells them to research. They don't teach them how. Just like how they're told to focus but never taught them how. Now that students have a smart and efficient solution, like using AI, they complain? It's time for the school system to acknowledge problem solving skills and teach them guidance rather than teaching them how to be factory workers. That's so WW2.

We developed technology in order to make use of it and to the extent that it works well also become dependent on it as that is appropriate in many instances. There's no point in developing technology that you are then forbidden to use.
