Why do so many Americans mispronounce the word nuclear?

I wasn't aware that they did.

Aside from George W Bush, and the occasional movie where they mispronounce it on purpose, to show that the character is a moron, I've never actually heard a real person mispronounce it.

A lot of it is just how our brains like to simplify patterns. “Nuclear” is /NOO-klee-er/, but English has tons of common words ending in “-cular” or “-cular” sounds, like “particular,” “circular,” “molecular.” So people’s mouths slide into “NOO-kyuh-ler” by analogy. 🇺🇸

Once presidents and TV characters said “nucular,” it got reinforced socially, so it stopped sounding “wrong” to many ears.

Where i live, that is the last anyone's talking about. I am sure they mispronounce the word if given the opportunity. The problem here is the rural folks that venture into our rather built up town mispronounce just about everything.

I have jokingly pointed this out in replies to a friend that finds it hilarious. But it is true. For example, you would not think it was possible to screw up the word "before", but they do it. They just shorten it to 'fore. Explain? Nope, it is 'splain that to me. Nuclear? Who knows...

The world spells it ALUMINIUM and Worcester is pronounced WOOSTER because it's from French and adding shire is anglicising it.
