Should we stop adding new words to the English language?

There are already over 170,000 words, more like 470,000 if you include words that nobody remembers or uses. And can we please stop calling normal people cisgender?

Language only stays useful by evolving. In my 20+ years of teaching and coaching, I’ve seen how new words often solve real problems: they name new technologies, social realities, and identities so people can communicate precisely.

We don’t need to *use* every new term, but banning new words would freeze English in time and make it less able to describe modern life.

As for “cisgender”: it’s a technical term, like “left‑handed” or “extrovert.” You’re free not to use it, but for some people it’s a helpful descriptor in certain conversations.

Also, if we need new words to navigate modern life, maybe modern life is the problem?

What source are you using?
Some estimates are as high as a million words in the English language.
I do not agree that we need to stop adding words. There’s still so much that we don’t know and we will need new words to describe new discoveries and new developments.
We could do a damn sight better educating people so that they don’t misuse existing words and give them new meanings. I loathe the lazy and ignorant use of “cuckhold”, for example. Cuckhold is a very old word derived from the Cuckoo bird, which lays its eggs in other birds’ nests. The Cuckoo hatches and then throws the other hatchlings out of the nest. No joke. But the parents don’t know any better. So they feed and raise their avicidal foster child like its their own. Cuckholding is raising someone else’s child. But people use it describe everything from relational passivity to open relationships and swinging. It’s lazy and ignorant, and there are so many great words available. It’s absurd to misuse words deliberately.

You’re probably doing it wrong. Don’t just memorize words and definitions. Learn their synonyms and replace them in your vocabulary. You’ll remember better the words you’re actually using.

Language always it follows and as it does of course new words are created. We need more words in many cases because technology is also evolving.
