Do you follow your family career path?

Years ago, kids learn from their grandparents and/or parents. When they grow up, they continue their job/career/business.

I didn't know this till I got older. I learned that there are multiple family members who are in the education field.

As of now, my own kids are not following my career path, however, my niece seems to be going for her education degree.

What career path do you follow? Or you went on your own?

my parents and most of my family/relatives... they're in businesses, as in... their own business

I grew up, not interested on working for the business of my family, lol... and I actually didn't do it once, not with my parents anyway

I did go to college but I made the mistake of going for a career that was readily available and it would have paid well had I continued that path, HOWEVER... I didn't care for a pay, and I knew that I didn't care for a pay like that so when I was half-way there... I just decided to quit that... and guess what, I went into business, with my family... lmao

a cousin of mine, her father really wanted her to work with him, "help me out with my fourth business" and she really didn't want to do that, she wanted to study instead... and since she's my favorite cousin ever I was just like... I'll do it, and just leave her alone and stop pestering her... let her study

so, I did it just to try it and then I ended up liking it... I liked some aspects of it, and I'm still on it, my own business though... and my niece is working on her own, on the things she studied for... most of the family and relatives are going into business, but that's perhaps because a whole lot of careers today... are paying nothing much and some of them are paying "none"

Thank you for asking. I am passionate with my job.
Hubby and I also do a small side business.
I have a lot of ideas and plans. One will be implemented in a year or two. Some will have to let go. I can't do everything.
but having my hubby around is good. We discuss these posiblities often... then excicute what makes sense.

definitely a good idea to not rush into things... best to plan them for as much as possible

My mom was a dental assistant before becoming a housewife.
My dad was a top notch machinist who was lead man of the experimental machine lab at a major aerospace corporation.
His dad had also been a machinist.

I had no plan when I was growing up. I didn't study for anything in particular. I had various low paying jobs from the time I was 16 and spent my spare time partying and playing guitar and singing in rock bands.

When I was 26, I got handed a job by an up and coming auto insurance company as a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser trainee.
It turned out to be a great company and, once I learned the ropes, I wound up loving the field work. The salary was great and the benefits were amazing.
I stayed with it until I retired after 30 years with a small pension and a lot of money in a 401(k).

So I didn't follow my dad's career working 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week in a machine shop. I'm glad I didn't.

Sounded like its connected to the car business.
Just like my uncle was the treasury for the Dept. of Ed way back in the 40s or 50s. He retired with a very very very good pension.
I am not as lucky. But still love what I do.
A few other relatives also became teachers or related positions.

Nah, my parents have no influence on my career choice, which I just kind of fell into anyway.

Most of my family are in small business and trades. I started in business too, but discovered I loved teaching and coaching people more than running operations. That led me to an MBA, then into education, training, and career coaching.

What matters is whether the work fits your strengths, values, and the life you want—your kids and niece will likely sort into paths that match who they are, not just where you are.

No. My father was a cop. No way would i have had the temperment for that job. I got lucky. I got menial job and did that for over 20+ years. But i always invested 15% of my paycheck since i started and at a 4% match in company stock that eventually was raised to 6% the stock has exploded over 6000% over the past 20+ years. That stock is now worth a half million today. And that is just the company match in stock. For the last 5 years i've made more in my retirement fund than at my job. If i could predict what healthcare was going to cost in the future with any real accuracy, and could take distributions without using IRS rule 72t, i'd have retired by now.

My life definitely has taken a path less traveled.

It would have been easy for me to follow the steps of my father and take over the family business. However, my interests lay elsewhere. Nor have I ever received any pressure to study in the same field. I had complete freedom to find my own way.

No. none of my family ever did anything in high tech although recently I learned that my grandmother was a schoolteacher before she immigrated to the US. Maybe thats why I started teaching.
