How should schools and workplaces adapt to advancing AI and technology?

Schools and workplaces need to shift from “learning tools” to “learning how to think with tools.”

From my experience, the most important adaptations are:

1. Teach AI literacy
- How AI works, where it fails, bias, privacy, prompt-writing, verification.
- Treat AI like a calculator for thinking: powerful, but you must still know the math.

2. Prioritize human skills
- Critical thinking, writing, numeracy, empathy, teamwork, leadership, ethics.
- These become *more* valuable as routine tasks are automated.

3. Redesign assessment and performance metrics
- In schools: more oral exams, projects, process logs, in‑class work, and reflection on how AI was used.
- In workplaces: evaluate judgment, problem framing, and impact, not keystrokes or time online.

4. Integrate AI into daily workflows
- Train students and staff to use AI for brainstorming, drafting, coding, data analysis, language support.
- Create clear “AI use policies” (what’s allowed, what must be disclosed, what’s off-limits).

5. Focus on adaptability and continuous learning
- Make learning a permanent expectation: micro‑courses, internal academies, learning days.
- Teach people how to reskill quickly when tools change.

6. Strengthen digital and data ethics
- Consent, data protection, IP, fairness.
- Discuss real cases: deepfakes, algorithmic bias, surveillance at work.

7. Leaders must model the change
- Principals, managers, and executives should use AI themselves and talk openly about it.
- Reward experimentation instead of punishing every mistake.

Slowly, and quickly.

Schools should adapt slowly. Kids need to learn math, writing and science to build their understanding of the world and their place in it. They do not need to use AI for 90% of tasks. It can be useful for e. g. language instruction or finding research to draw on, etc.

Workplaces such exploit the heck out of it. One professor I heard the other day started their career in consulting. Her comment was that in 7 years as an entry level consultant she didn't do a single thing that AI can't do now. I've seen consultants, even been one occasionally, and I think that's right. The social problem no-one has solved yet is how you develop experienced senior staff if there is literally no reason to employ junior staff producing mindless garbage much of their first decade out of college.

You don't. AI is a cancer that will destroy all creativity, and it is happening already. The government wants everyone to be mindless zombies, and it will use AI as just another tool to make that happen.

As a side note: ALL AI is banned where I work, along with taking shortcuts in communication, starting with text messages.

Ban it. Make all work done in class in front of a human teacher who can see they are not using AI.
