Stephen Reviews: Disney and Pixars Onward

In a modern day suburban Fantasyland, magical creatures live in modern convenience. Pixies are in motorcycle gangs, dragons are like pet dogs, centaurs are cops, and two elf boys are on a quest to spend one last day with their deceased dad brought back to life by a spell.

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland are two brothers looking to cast a spell that would bring their dad back for one day. The mother played by Julia Louis Dreyfuss shows the boys a gift that is to be opened on Ian's 16th birthday. Turns out its a magic staff with a special gem that brings back the dad for one whole day. But, it just brings back his legs. From there a quest ensues to find another gem and restore the whole dad for one day. From there they run into a motorcycle gang of pixies and sprites, a manticore who runs a Chuck E Cheese style pizza resturaunt, and several magical beings all while Ian is learning to do magic with the staff.

Overall the movie has a lot of references to Magic The Gathering, Dungeons and dragons, Lord of the rings, and Harry Potter. It's kinda like Shrek too where mythical beings live in a modernised society.

Overall it's a great movie as well that deals with the pain of loss, saying goodbye and holding on to memories with no regrets.

I personally give it a B+. It tells a very good story and manages to captivate you for 1 hr and 40 minutes. But, it does feel kinda long after awhile and doesn't really feel like a traditional Pixar/ Disney movie. This could have really been made by any movie studio not just Disney. Also there is no Pixar short before the movie. Instead it's a Simpson's short about Maggie.

I do recommend a watch of it if you are a fan of mythical creatures and Lord Of The Rings.
