I have empathy for a number of life situations because I know those are real whereas I am actually not that emotional when watching a soap or movie because subconsciously I know that those scenes are staged and most of the time do not reflect reality.
But that is where my tough, been there done that, seen everything approach to your question stops.
I tend to soften more than I should when I see real life stories of people that were struck by fate or have health issues, when kids and animals have taken the short and dirty end of the stick. Yes, then I shed a tear and I am glad when I can get away from it just with the remote.
But that does not mean that it all ends when I shut off the TV. I bring some of those memories with me to bed and rehash them and deprive myself from sleep.

My wife cries easily. She gets totally swept up in the characters and easily falls for sympathetic response, like when a baby cries for no reason just because it sees another baby crying. One of our inside jokes is, when a movie that made her cry is over I say, "You must have liked that movie a LOT." Then we both laugh.
I'm more cynical and aware of manipulative techniques. Sometimes I even laugh at schlockiness. But I am a romantic and I'll admit that some movies and plays can make me cry if the plots are compelling and the performances are excellent. As a man, I try to be more covert about crying, though. lol
I'll mention one that really got to me. In the movie Forrest Gump, when the girl he loved was dying, I almost started bawling. Tears were streaming down my face.
I've cried at 3 movies, Miracle in Cell No. 7 (Korean movie, heartbreaking at the end) Grave of the Fireflies (Quite old anime movie, again absolutely heartbreaking) and the first Pokemon Movie. May have choked up slightly at the end of Endgame as well...
I wasn't crying for this until my first big heartache. Then I was crying everytime there is a love scene. Now I'm still sensitive in front of love scenes but I don't cry everytime. If I was with a woman I love I wouldn't cry at all and I would think: "They are lucky but I'm lucky too to be with her...". But if I'm single like now I think: "I envy them and I miss love, why don't I deserve it?".
Sure... some men and women even cry at weddings, they cry at happy events, they'll even cry if they had really beautiful passionate umm moments together... so you know.
If you cry during mary poppins or sound of music then don't ever see disney's UP you won't be able to handle it. That movie was so depressing even i can't watch it a second time
Who said I was teasing. I'm highly advising you not to watch it for your own sake. Because if you can't handle a movie like Mary Poppins you sure as hell won't be able to handle the movie UP.

I don't really cry during movies. Very rarely does that happen, but normally if it involves a dog dying or a character I became attached to with the right atmosphere
Honestly, I am something of an emotional person, but I have lost my ability to cry a while ago. I do feel upset when something bad happens, or super happy when something good happens, but I don't cry anymore.
Ugh yes and I fucking hate it. I cried at the the themes of longing and childlessness and being broken in toy story four. Fuck that movie LOL they also turned buzz into a himbo again. LoL

Some movies/series get to me as well :) Not full on crying, but a few tears here and there. Some topics are just extremely relatable. In general, women are better at empathy, so they relate more.
In the good old summertime isn't really a tear jerker. The movie "You've got mail" with Tom Hanks was like a modern remake of "in the good old summertime". Lol, my family watched older movies when i was a kid.

I don't cry while watching movies, because I'm a dude. Crying at movies is for chicks, which is why soppy movies are aimed at them. IT'S FOR FACKING CHICKS, YOU FACKING LOSER!!!
