The males are actually also just called ladybug or ladybird or lady beetle in countries more associated with British English rather than American. Ladybird is actually more connected to the original etymology of the insect. The original name was "our lady's bird". "Our lady" is actually a reference to the virgin Mary of "Jesus Christ" fame. The reason being that Mary was often depicted with a red coat.
If you're bothered by that, you can always call them by their official scientific name: Coccinellidae.
