My opinion of him is rather negative. He's a weak character and not very consistent. In the beginning of the book, he told Scarlett that she loves her, yet the next moment he says she's gonna marry Melanie. Also, he kissed her on two different occasions. He shouldn't have been leading her on like this

He kinda reminds me of my hubby, except he doesn’t, but maybe still can, drink as much as he used to and doesn’t ride a horse. He has the looks (handsome, blue eyes, blonde hair), he’s a good shot, he is very charming, and loves spending time with me!

I could resonate with him... except for his insistence on joining a military sworn to uphold and defend a constitution other than America's and to fight to the death for a state and nation that seceded specifically to defend the institution of slavery. And the casual acceptance of slavery rubs me the wrong way. However, good people can and do occasionally hold bad, even unjust ideas. I don't really ride well, as I don't have a horse, but I have enjoyed it immensely when I've done it. I don't like to drink in excess. I do own 2 rifles. To outshoot me isn't much of an accomplishment. I'm an OK shot. Perhaps if he visited me in the 21st century we could go flying together. But I soooooo resonate with his desire to spend time with his beloved wife.

Interesting side note: I heard a commentator on the film talk about a particular scene where Ashley is talking to Scarlett about the progress of the Civil War. He offers the opinion that it's not going well for the Confederacy. There is sadness in his voice. Uncertainty about the future. Deep regret. The commentator noted that when that scene was shot, Leslie Howard's (the actor who portrayed Ashley) home country of England was at war with Germany. England's future as a nation was by no means certain. The commentator believed that Howard's feelings for his home were bleeding into his performance

My mother always thought Howard was soooooo much more handsome than Gable. My mother also married an Englishman.

I have actually seen that movie. In the movie he was a nice guy but a little bit wimpy and he was easily manipulated by scarlet and his wife.
