Mario for me. I think he's the first major video game mascot. Sonic came soon after but I don't think the Sega Master System was anywhere near as popular as Famicom/Nintendo. Sonic tended to become more popular in my experience after the Megadrive/Genesis.

My personal gaming icon might be Fūma though of Getsu Fūma Den (1987). Yet I doubt hardly anyone knows him outside of Japan, but that game was a mega-hit when I was a boy and the character of Fūma was very popular appearing in lots of magazines and spin-offs.

Pac-Man is a great choice as well! Yet I went with Mario when considering the rest of the world for the combination of both his extreme popularity and longevity. Even little kids today know about Mario and probably have played some Mario games.
