I was lead guitar and vocals in rock bands beginning in jr high and throughout my 20s. I focused on guitar and not as much on vocals back then, meaning that I didn't give a lot of thought into HOW to sing. But I wasn't bad.

I got out of music for about 20 years. When I started playing again, I focused more on vocals. Friends have a karaoke machine and had karaoke parties a few times a year. I learned how to sing lots of types of music and was surprised to find that I could sing crooner, R&B, 60s pop, and other things that I never thought of singing before really well.

I don't have a wide vocal range because my top end is shot. But I learned how to use the tools I have. Timing, dynamics, emotion, some rasp when appropriate. Of course, you also have to choose songs that you are capable of singing and you have to choose the right key.

From about 2005 to the end of 2019, I was doing a lot of playing and singing. I had my own band for about 10 years before everything fell apart in 2020. There was bass, drums, keyboards and me on guitar and vocals.

I'm my own worst critic but people really like my vocals.

I always make jokes about how bad my singing voice is, but the one and only time I had a go at karaoke was at a very busy club one Saturday Night, and apparently I did very well judging by the nice comments I received throughout the night.
