The short answer is China. When you're marketing to the entire world, you need to make your movie accessible to everyone, without relying on the audience's knowledge of American (or your specific, if you're somewhere else) culture. You also don't want to risk offending other cultures, or they won't see the movie, so complex character dramas are out. Complex humor, too, is pretty verboten, as it often doesn't translate well. Many places don't like interracial love stories, and won't tolerate same-sex ones, which cuts down on options, too. And differing moral beliefs reduce the acceptability of THAT kind of complexity. So Hollywood relies on the simplest, broadest things it has.
And that's why something like "The Third Man" would never fly today, while Michael Bay's "Boobsplosions 4: The Revengeining" makes half a billion dollars.
Well, more broadly, "the international market". Regular Chinese movies would probably have the same difficulties over here.
Sure. It's about the difficulties of not having a shared cultural knowledge base; not "Grr, those evil Chinese people!". Sorry if that didn't come across.
George Lucas said the studios are run by suits, who are scared to take any risks, so they'll only go with what has a proven track record. That's why any movie that's successful will get sequelled to death, or get re-booted. The primary motive is not good story telling, but making money, and keeping the share holders happy.
On top of that, Hollywood has a woke agenda, so that's more important than a good story. That's why you now have a black Little Mermaid and a VERY multiracial town in Frozen II.
They are trying to hard to remake old movies. I’ve lost interest! I have Netflix. I’d rather watch The Green Mile or Forrest Gump than any of the crap they are putting out today! I love any Denzel movie too. John Q made me cry my eyes out

My working theory is the boomers retired (some to prison) and left a power vacuum.
The new generation thought it was some kind of activist cause and only now are realising that mortgages don't pay for themselves and that Twitter won't pay for anything, not even Elon.
They're getting better so give them some time.
There's too much financial risk involved with trying new stories and most studios are too lazy to work with practical actual effects on location. They're lazy and, of course, cheap. So they just retell existing stories or revamp them completely to fit political narratives. Filmmaking and storytelling are becoming lost arts.
Yes, nobody has an original idea. They make remakes of old movies or sequels of movies that were fairly popular. I really liked the Marvel movies but those have been beaten to death, There are so many things you can write about but it must be easier to recycle old ideas.
in my opinion it’s been thinned out by all the various Distrobution channels. Used to be multiple writers and producers and directors worked on projects together and they were the best of the generation so great movies came out. But now there is: cable, hbomax, Hulu, Netflix, appletv, prime, paramount, big box.. and I may be missing 5 more. So all that talent is distributed to these channels and us the consumers end up with lower quality and higher quantity.
Make sense?
It’s going down hill hard to find a good movie anymore. Everything is a remake or a part 5 because they have nothing else. Creativity must be hard to come by now.
The VFX aren't even good anymore. Jurassic Park look 100 times better than every Marvel movie. And it came out in the 90's.
Feminism and social justice filled our movies with quotas and agendas instead of good stories and action.
So all we get now are shit movies trying to enforce non-realistic social ideas.
i liked when they used to put boobs in movies
like for the girls
all the stories are used up
I didn't know people still watched movies
