I saw a response to this that read "Can't wait to see Tom hanks playing Nelson Mandela" It's simply not comparable, is it? Ariel is a fictional figure for Pete's sake. Who really cares what the colour of Ariel's skin is? The kids? Unlike adults, kids are colourblind. They aren't born to be racist
I am for diversity BUT I am fully against the cancel anti-white! This is the removal of an already white character in order to replace them with a black person. If you added another character who is black, I would have no problem. Disney is currently changing moves and Theam park rides and attractions removing white characters and replacing them with black. This is NOT equal equality! This is racism!

Ell oh ell! It doesn’t matter what century it is. Mermaids are almost certainly a figment of mankind’s imagination. So people being bent out of shape about what imaginary beings should look like is so far beyond ridiculous that i’m not certain there are words yet that adequately describe that combination of ignorance and privilege. I’m quite certain the whole of society would be better off without such people.
Probably because Disney is being lazy by race swapping a character that was originally white instead of actually making the effort to create an original character that represents people of different races and ethnicities.
I do agree with this! I do also think the casting is pretty good so far since she is a "red boned" girl. The thing is she can sing. That's the major thing, right.
I don't know why people are angry but I think if that is why... Those are horrible reasons. Sometimes it's okay to go against yesterday... As a black person I hope we all do.
just because we are in the 21st century does not mean we should ignore something called "fan base"
I believe Netflix tried doing this with their Resident Evil series by casting Lance Reddick as their Albert Wesker hence why this franchised failed miserably.

Don't really care as long as she does a good job... On that same token leftists would have an absolute melt down if a white person was chosen to portray a black character, or straight person chosen to portray a gay person, or a normal person to portray a trans person. Both sides of this are just stupid.
I think people just don't like well established, well known, characters being repurposed. Take James Bond for example, I grew up watching Mr. Bonds adventures. I do not want an Asian, Black, Hispanic, or anything else Bond. I was a white British male playing that character because that's who he is. Now there are other 00 agents, the canon has made that very clear so pick one of them and nobody cares.
It because for 2 centuries the little mermaid has been white young woman as the story originated in Copenhagen, Denmark. Having a black little mermaid changes a continuity of the story. I don't personally care because you can make spinoffs of a fairytale because they are fictional stories. It is kind of like how playing classical in a new exciting way is "wrong". People get angry about classical things being changed.
My biggest issue is that it’s not animated anymore let’s be honest here the little mermaid sucked it was some boring crybaby half salmon bitch who saw a penis for the first time wished for a pussy then went on land left her family and friends behind for dick
Most people have a problem with taking a beloved character and changing her skin color just to appear "inclusive".
As you say, it is the 21st century, why are the filmmakers trying to rewrite history instead of making new stories that are diverse from their inception?
My sister says it's because White women are all for inclusion and racial equality as long as White women don't lose their power and attention in the media.
because there is no reason to change the race. just make a new character. or at least make her hair actually more red... live action disney films have been bad anyways.
It's not that we're butthurt, necessarily. It's the fact that Disney is willing to change the ethnicity of a character to appeal to a minority audience instead of creating a whole new original character.
So a beautiful girl that can sing doesn't appeal to a majority audience? No white girls will like this character? Black girls have liked white characters forever so this just proves your racist mindset. I am a black woman and I loved Ariel. I was a girl then.

I don't know!

You'd be surprised. Children are oops.
@AngeryCapsicum but that's usually (not all the time) because of the way the parents raised them. They pick up things from people around them.
There's always going to be a good amount of people butthurt by the slightest change if things.
I feel like the reason is obvious, it's because she's black and being a mermaid has always been depicted as white.
They don't like that change, for whatever reason.

This right here as a black men
@skydragonx5 I don't think that many people get it.

They had that princess Tiana.
Not to mention totally butchering a fucking classic
Me personally I didn’t really like little mermaid but are these rat bastards seriously going to take that same turd and reheat it?
@TonightYouu I get the feeling that you weren’t the targeted demographic for the movie any ways lol
I guess because Ariel has always had light skin and red hair, so changing it is lack of respect toward source material.
And even if you make a fanfic then having someone who live several meters underwater black, doesn't make sense from a logical point of view.
Interesting concept, scientifically.
@Flower7 Thank you

@242plusInfinity Sometimes is, but not in case of books.
I do not care about diversity. I want to stick to the original idea.
If they really want to expand diversity, create a new character and write it good that people will see it as interesting.
Let's face it - companies are not doing this for diversity.
just because we are in the 21st century does not mean we should ignore something called "fan base"

Studios have made the calculation that pissing off the fanbase is worth the free publicity they get from the controversy.
@AngryCarl and the fact that their franchises always fails miserably in the end pretty much explains its actually not worth it.

Aw two worthless piece of shit leftists down voted me without leaving a comment, how cowardly of you.

because people apparently think that in the small chance mermaids are real, they must be white too...
MHO!

No one has a problem with a black Mermaid.

White women need to be the center of everything.
Idc if she’s purple. Mermaids 🧜♀️ and fish come in different colours. Idc! Give me a good solid mermaid story! I like mermaids 🧜♀️
I haven't seen what this is from, but it pisses me off if it's true that people are upset about her color.
Racism is a very triggering topic for me. It makes me so sad that it even exists.

Good question.
On a side note: I can't wait for Tom Cruise to be the next Black Panther.
Wait, what's that? You don't want established characters being messed with and race swapped for no reason? Interesting...
