I am not trying to argue with you. I’m sure they think you are good. If they did then that seems like a family friend way to avoid making you think too much of yourself…to reel you in.
If they do not think you are good or think you need improvement but don’t think they can tell you straightforwardly then sending something like they did is a subtle hint of encouragement. “I like this one…you ought to go more in this direction. What do you think etc” kind of thing. I am guessing because I am not there. I am certainly not trying to discourage you in anyway.
