Why couldn't they have made the resident evil movies with the same plot lines as the books and the videogames?

If res. 1, 2, or three or their remakes were made into movies as they were, they would have been epic. The movies- so far removed from those great nailbiting edge of your seat storylines and just straight up tacky and horrible. I mean they had the Nemesis lose a FISTFIGHT to a woman for crying out loud when in the game it took a RAILGUN to kill him after he mutated and grew. Just don't understand how the resident evil franchise was allowed to become the steaming pile of crap that it did.

As I recall, the first Resident Evil movie came out in early 2002. Let's look at what video game movies had already been made by that point:

-Super Mario Brothers, which was incredibly awful (interestingly, Shigeru Miyamoto himself criticized it for sticking too close to the plot of the games, which suggests that either or I are doing WAY too many drugs).

-Double Dragon, which was awful, and which featured a disturbing number of close-up shots of the butt of a young Alyssa Milano- that may not sound extreme, but remember that I saw it as a thirteen-year-old boy and STILL found it disturbing.

-Wing Commander, which was so awful that my brain fires up a series of elaborate distractions whenever I try to think about it, to keep me from crying in a heap on the floor.

-Street Fighter, which was actually not awful, but only by the virtue of being so hammy that Jews are forbidden to watch it.

-And Tomb Raider, which I never actually saw.

NONE of them were commercial successes (to an appreciable degree, I mean). As a result, a logical moviemaker would deviate from the pattern of trying to copy a given game's plot (either because it doesn't work to lure in players, or because those who WOULD be lured in already know the plot, so why would they bother?), and just brought in elements (setting, characters, etc.) from the games to try and broaden the appeal. Evidently it worked- enough for them to keep making those movies, at least. What other series can say that?

Why would you want the same exact story? Why not have it not follow the lore?
