Why are movie remakes never as good as the originals?

Seriously, improving special effects doesn't make a movie better.

The movie that sets me off is Firestarter (Original by Stephen King) vs the TWO attempts to remake it. And the Book was even better than the original movie. Reading the book will flat out creep you out as it gives a detailed description of each of Charlie's abilities, some of which are left out of any of the movies. In the book, it specifically tells you that Charlie does not need "hand gestures" nor "words" to activate her abilities. She simply creates fire and telekinesis and telepathy based on the power of thought alone. She is also bullet proof and has ESP including "future sight". the Book also agrees with the original movie, in that she is stated to be capable of "cracking the planet in half".

Some are. I like both, but I think the 1985 Anne of Greengables is better than the 1919 movie. But you are right a lot of remakes are worse. 1924 Phantom of the opera is better than the musical. 1934 Les Miserables is better than the musical.

Because the original sets in people's minds how the characters look and how they should be. People almost expect the new actor to be playing the old actor as much as the role so they're already set up to fail.

Maybe, but in the movie I mentioned, the Firestarter remake, they try to scare you by having Charlie scream while she uses the ability. Instead of being horrifying, this just makes the scenes comical. The only scene they did right was having Vicky, Charlies mom, ripping some person's eyeballs out during the opening credits of the movie. that was probably the "scariest" part of the remake.
