The Beach Boys were some of the first music I got into as a young child. I’d probably put them in my pound-for-pound favorite musical acts of all time. Absolutely incredible sound.
It would probably be shorter to name the songs I DON’T love from them. I’d say Surfin’ USA (maybe in Teen Wolf) was almost certainly the first song I heard, and I was instantly hooked. And I Get Around from The Flight Of The Navigator, that was the other big one. I think I got my parents to buy me the Surfin’ Safari vinyl record, and I played that shit OFF THE HOOK.
I actually didn’t catch some of their stuff til I was older, like all the Pet Sounds album work: God Only Knows, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, etc. And I was in maybe fourth grade when they dropped Kokomo, that was huge, we would try to sing that all the time, probably fucking up half the tropical locations mentioned😂 I was even listening to their Christmas album on Christmas Day, literally the only Christmas music I sought out this year.
I’ve seen them live twice now. I saw Mike Love’s tour, and he KILLED IT. Wish I could’ve seen all the surviving members together but I guess there’s some interpersonal beef at this point. Bruh…. i was filming I Get Around from the third row (I either get tickets right up front, or I ain’t going😎), and Mike Love saw me and pointed right at me right as he’s doing the best fucking line of the song, “my buddies and me are gettin’ real well-known, yeah, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone”, I was so stoked to get that on camera. Then I saw Brian Wilson doing his Pet Sounds tour, he did that whole album, and then went into the other hits. BW is COOKED, can’t sing a lick anymore, had to be helped on and off stage, and Al Jardine and the fill-ins were carrying the tune…. but it was still so fucking impactful to see that dude perform. My favorite song, arguably the best slow jam of all-time, is Little Surfer Girl. Brian Wilson, before he starts, just says “this was the first song I ever wrote, when I was 18 (might’ve said 16, can’t remember)…”, and just goes into the song, and I could’ve fallen out of my seat. Imagine sitting down as a teenager dropping a fucking BANGER on your first try. Absolute legends, man. They’ll probably start dying off soon, and I’ll be wrecked every time. Nobody does it like The Beach Boys.
Forgot to say, Little Surfer Girl maybe my favorite, all the big ones you could mention, I love those all as classics, but to add a less-heralded one that’s still every bit as good, maybe Don’t Worry, Baby. Shout outs to Be True To Your School, All Summer Long, and Help Me, Rhonda. Just pretty much the whole catalogue slaps, lmao
Beach Boys are/were awesome!
Surfin' USA
Kokomo
Good Vibrations
But my favorite, by far, is California Dreamin'. You can see the grey clouds scudding across the sky at the end of summer through that song.
Wait! Isn’t “California Dreaming” by the Mama’s & The Papa’s?
@CrazyGirl2 GREAT catch! Right, not their song originally, but the recorded it in 1986 so my introduction to it was their version. Wikipedia says, ""California Dreamin'" is a song written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and first recorded by Barry McGuire. The best-known version is by the Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on the original version and released it as a single in 1965."
Wow! Thank you very much, that was very nice of you to say. Also, that’s really cool, I had no idea that Beach Boys did the song in the 80’s. My parents are like mega 1980’s music fans, so that’s all I heard growing up in my house. My best friend Judy, on the other hand, her parents usually played 1960’s music. That’s where I was exposed to my favorite the Beetles, as well as the Who, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, etc… and yes the Mama’s and the Papa’s too. Also speaking of…. Did you know that Brian Wilson’s daughter and John Phillip’s daughter formed a band in the 80’s called Wilson Phillips. My god, I’m just a fountain of useless trivia today aren’t I?
@CrazyGirl2 ... so cool about Phillips and Wilson and no, didn't know that! And, yeah, you opened my eyes to this. My exposure to California Dreamin' was from the Beach Boys as I chewed through CDs in the mid 80s! :)
You must have been like my parents, they were both incredibly into music in the 80’s and early 90’s. My dad (who keeps almost all of his old electronics) still has his portable CD player from the ‘80s
@CrazyGirl2 ... I was. I'm a 1974 baby so when I turned 10 it was a collection of my dad's Abba cassette tapes and then I started in on pop and classical. By the end of the 80s I had several hundred CDs and continued into the mid-90s. We got rid of all of them with the subsequent moves and children. I regret that now. :(
I live pretty close to where the Beach Boys went to High school by the way ;)
@Still-alive... now THAT is cool!
Yeah, so you’re close to my parents age, it was the same with them, my mom being an American was into Abba, and Journey in the ‘70s and had Abba Gold (until I stole it!) Dad was more of a Queen, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, and even a Moody Blues guy, being English.
WOW! That really is cool! Did you go to that school?
@CrazyGirl2 No i didn't go there but i had a friend who lived like across the street from it lol
Oh thats a shame, but a really cool story, Doug. Thanks for sharing that. 😘💋
im a 90s baby but i also only thought the Beach boys did california dreamin 🤣 Had no idea it was someone elses
@DizzyDesii Apparently according to @Snowedin The Beach Boys recorded a cover of it in the 1980’s. That was something that I never knew.
@CrazyGirl2 yea the beach boys version was the only one i grew up knowing tho 😂
@DizzyDesii I’ve actually never heard it, if I remember I’ll look it up b4 I go to bed.
@DizzyDesii Ahhh, Thank you SO much, that was so unbelievably sweet and thoughtful of you. Wow I actually got a little bit of tearing in my eyes. Really, thank you 😊
California Girls! My parents are huge ‘80s music fans and I first heard the ‘80s rock version, I can remember who recorded, although I think it was maybe David Lee Roth? Anyway, at some point my dad played The Beach Boys version for me when he found out I didn’t know that The Beach Boys recorded it first.
If you like brilliant harmony, check out this cover band playing my favorite Beach Boy tune.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/GmJ6e06eYcMIt's rare when a cover band can actually do better than the original band, but these guys did it. This song is so awesome.

I like this one. It was a live performance so it's not perfect, has a few mistakes... couldn't find the studio version.

Their cover of The Regents' "Barbara Ann."
Feel flows. Hate the “beach” songs now. Love the LSD phase. Same for Beatles.
I liked all of them and they are the easiest to play on the drums when I was in a band
