What happened to music with any actual depth?

Is and always was not under the top selling albums, with maybe some exceptions.

But music thats being played on the radio to entertain the masses has to be easy to appeal to the smalles common ground. It has an easy rythm, always the same tempi, and some generic lyrics, so most people enjoy it when its played in the background, in the super market, or in the car.

You have to look in the lesser known niches.

Technically the lack of depth is due to the mastering process but I have a feeling that's not what you mean. What sort of music are you looking for?

Oh, it's still out there- but it's not going to be in the top 40. Even in his heyday, you didn't see Frank Zappa there- except one song he wrote that was parodying that kind of music.

Record labels are now kinda over rated a lot of the best artists on the music scene are now the niche acts.

It's coming from bands that rarely get radio play, let alone hits on the charts.
