Is it only me or do books smell like chocolate and wood?

I don't know, it's just a thing that I have noticed. The Ruskin Bond's journal which I bought from the bookstore in Mussoorie smells like chocolate and old dry wood. It's a pleasant sweet smell which I hope will be released as a perfume soon! It is so addicting. During the flight I read half of the book just because of the smell. But then I reminded myself that journals shouldn't be read at once but one poem/essay before sleep. The novel I bought in the airport also smells really identical. Infact, out of curiosity I sniffed almost every book in that bookstore of airport and they all smell the same! The same sweet and woody scent! After I came home, I sniffed through all the old novels which I bought earlier and they all smell the same however that sweet smell is faint in the dork diary series which I bought two years earlier, the woody smell is strong though. This keychain which was given to me as a token from that bookstore in Mussoorie also smells exactly same! It's a wooden keychain.

The journal's name is 'It's a Wonderful Life' by the way.

For some reasons my school books and course books don't smell the same, they smell like my dad's office which is filled with A4 size papers in every corner and has wooden interior They don't smell comforting, they smell professional and boring.

For some reasons, it's the literature books only. They smell so comforting, it smells like a smell I was finding my whole life!

Is it only me or have you noticed it as well?

They do!!! Well, not chocolate, but they have a very distinct smell.

It's the paper, the finish (or lack thereof) on the paper, and the printing process. Most school and professional books (at least my experience in the US) have the more glossy, finished paper (it lasts longer) whereas novels and journals and other more personal books have a rougher less finished paper which maintains it's earthy, wood smell.

Oh right! You're correct. The rough texture and the woody smell of novels is so comforting. I wonder if I fell in love with reading because of that. They should do the same with professional books!

I agree! But sadly they don't last as long or look as professional. But it really is wonderful. Which is why the lack of tactile feedback on Kindles and e-readers is so sad.

They will last if taken care of properly. I have story books which are from the time I was of 4 years but I kept them well maintained (yeah I did scribble on them with colour pencils and tore few pages but they are fine as wine if we ignore that!). Professional books are tough and they are boring, they're good for nothing except the content which is even more boring than the appearance.

I think that the whole thought of Kindles and e-reading is illegal! Nothing compares to flipping pages of a beautiful novel with the old yellowed page and strong woody smell. I'm afraid there won't be paperback books in the future and our future generation won't be able to see such beauty!

The newer the book, the more sweet it smells. The older the book, the more woody it smells.

I personally don’t notice it, but I’ve definitely heard other people say books smell good. Wood makes sense because of paper.

I have got 4 keyboards. Depends on what you are trying to use for. In your case feels like digital piano would be better. For people like myself keyboard would be ok.

Yes digital piano would be better for me but that's something my parents are denying and I can't do anything about that.

I can understand somewhat now when people who brings in money makes decisions. You get to brush up your persuasion skills. My parents had bought me expensive computer once and it had paid off handsomely to me at least. And they putted lot more some of it was basic but crucial like food, clothes, shelter, day after day week after week for years.

I stop going to one of my best tuition when my teacher was keep asking me for money and I felt like my parents can't put any more money at this time. That workout badly for my education.

That was 10th grade I think. Indian parents should teach money responsibility and less shelter their kids. Not enable them. And I am just talking in general.

My parents aren't broke. They can spoil me as much as they can. They can buy me 3 digital pianos at once but they didn't, they want me to understand the value of money and I'm also would have rejected if they offered to buy me a digital piano. That's because I want to earn it in my own. I don't like being dependent on parents. And also, I'm not going to sell any of my things now. Because that's simply not needed.
