Do you think MBTI has some truth in it?

For example, I am ENFP and I’ve never really believed you can label people into one word as I think we are all so different, but yesterday my friend told me something that made me think that what if MBTI had some truth in it, she said “she has had lots of parties back in her city but none as good as the ones when she was with me” and she messaged that partying with me is an experience worth visiting my city every weekend.

That’s fun, because I am not much of a party goer, I prefer some other hobbies, horse riding, karting, reading, writing and some other activities.

But I do have a great time at every party, I can say that I am always in the middle of it and almost always having the time of my life.

But I am an introvert as well, after partying I need some time to recharge.

And I was reading the MBTI the other day and it said Campaigners are the life of the party and I felt like, it clicked. So I wonder, is there any truth in it?

I believe the MBTI test is useful to explain the way that our minds work.

Since they are archetypes of personalities based on our answers to questions about our behavior tendencies, I’d say an MBTI holds MUCH more weight than say a Zodiac sign.

There are 4 factors, and these 4 factors illustrate the way we tend to go about life.

Introvert/Extrovert, Sensing/Intuitive, Thinking/Feeling, Perceiving/Judging.

But again, these are tendencies—what we lean towards.

The thinking vs feeling is a good example of this. Nobody is going to live their life on 100% logic or 100% emotion. So nobody should be 100% thinking or 100% feeling. But, you can imagine that a very stoic person may be 80/20 and a very emotional personal may be 20/80. And someone that teeters back and forth may be closer to 55/45 or 45/55.

For me personally, I have different sides of me that are more or less pronounced depending on the scenario. I have a playful and lighthearted side of me that likes to have crack jokes and have fun. That side of me is ENFP. Then I have a very serious and calculating side of me that allows me to work calmly under enormous pressure. That side of me is ISTJ. Then, I have a side of me that is passionate, driven, charismatic, and ambitious. That part of me is ENFJ.

Everything mixed together, when I’m fully embracing all parts of me, I end up with INFJ.

My T/F it is very close though, like 49/51 or 48/52. Which means that I weigh my logic and emotions almost equally when I make decisions, but I tend to go with the choice that “feels” right to me. (Not what feels ‘good’—what feels ‘right’.)

For example, lets say I have to make a complicated decision, and the logical side of me has mapped out and analyzed all the pros and cons, logistics, implications, consequences, risks, etc. And then I’m left with 2 choices, knowing full well what both comprise of.

Let’s say this is a hiring situation. Both resumes are equally impressive. Then, what may be the deciding factor for me would be how the interview FELT. Did I have a good feeling about this person after interacting with them? Do I feel like they would be a better fit for the team? All of that is qualitative and intangible and not based on hard data. But, I would hire the one that ‘feels’ like the right decision (assuming their skills and experience are equal on their applications).

Whereas, if I was just working on pure logic. I may just be like. Okay, equal credential. Equal experience. This one applied first. So they get the position. Boom. Done.

Although very logical, I take my feelings into account, and allow my feelings and intuition to sway my final decision. Which is what makes me default to an F rather than a T.

So yeah, I think MBTIs are useful. But someone with a matching MBTI can be very different from you if you are like 55/45 (e. g. 55% extroverted 45% introverted) on one factor and they are 95/5 on that same factor. You’d both be labeled as “extroverts” on MBTI but 55% vs 95% is a big difference.

Another test that may be more useful could be the Enneagram test. 😉

One of my clients recommended that one. Though, he said it may be more useful for dating than hiring, haha. On that test, I’m a Type 3.

Its the opposite,

By observing people and their characters, scientist found out, most people are somewhere on 4 different axes,

somewhere between introverted and extroverted, somewhere between intuitive and observsant, snd so on

by taking the test, it will add points to each of the 8 extremes, and giving you the result and a corresponding personality.

other models of personality do a similiar thing. but with different categories.

mbti isn't "labeling people into one word". it's providing rough categories that are an ok tool to categorize people.

the point is to be general enough to describe most people with some level of accuracy. of course a generalized description of people can never reach an "individual" level of accuracy but that's not the point of these things. the point is generalization, not specificity.

I've taken the test different times and for the most part, I think it's bullshit.
