How accurate is this portrayal in the song Old Man by Neil Young?

The message in the song being that no matter what stage we’re at in our lives, human nature doesn’t change, nor does a person’s need for love and acceptance?

I didn't have any great fondness for Neil Young even before my hometown boys put him down ("Well, I hope Neil Young will remember, A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow") but. . . he is absolutely right. Human nature doesn't change from generation to generation. The conflicts and challenge which we face are essentially the same, whether you grew up holding a muzzle-loading rifle or an iPhone.

It is true and yet it is not. People are partially products of their environment. My father fought in WW2 and grew up during the depression. I could not even imagine what he went through and looking back I know that this may have caused the differences we had while I was growing up.

I like your interpretation, and might add that it invites the "old man" to look beyond economic, ethnic, and other social barriers to perform a comparison of two living creatures.
