I’m seriously considering it. I’m a fan of historical epics and Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors. I believe that more than any other director, he REALLY goes to extraordinary lengths to create a world for the audience, turning the extras, alleyways, streets, and buildings into characters as well. His movies are very immersive, and they aren’t dependent on a big name actor to carry them and entertain the audience—though Phoenix is a fine actor.

As he and Ridley Scott worked together previously on Gladiator, it’s safe to say the two work well together.

Also, since Phoenix is coming off his incredible performance in Joker, he suddenly has A LOT more eyes and fans dialed in on him. Joker really put him over as a fantastic, generational actor—now, like a prizefighter who just won a belt, he will be looking to not only duplicate his past performance, but exceed it. What better, grander figure to settle on than one of the greatest men in history? General Napoleon Bonaparte.

As a Frenchwoman, you are no doubt very familiar with Bonaparte and undoubtedly no far more about him than most people. Sadly, most Americans are completely ignorant of Napoleon. The man was a genius. Just a magnetic human being with astonishing capabilities who could literally movie millions of people and change the face of the world.

Sure, he had his blunders, but what spectacular blunders! Nothing the man did was small, from putting down riots in the Revolution to the Peninsular War to his campaigns in Egypt to the dismal failures in Russia.

So yeah, I’m excited about it. My only reservation is that Napoleon’s life was so full, so rich that it couldn’t be adequately captured in film.

Thank you for this excellent feedback. Indeed I know very well the life of Napoleon, in fact I am one of his biggest fans. But yes, that doesn't stop me from recognizing the mistakes he made.

But this man was a pure genius, I hope the film doesn't present him as a Hitler before his time, that's really my only fear lol.

Have you read the original script for his Robin Hood movie? It stars a far more sympathetic than usual sheriff of Nottingham, whose investigations of a murder lead to suspecting Robin Hood, who's kind of an asshole in this movie, but innocent. The script used actual twelfth-century English investigative techniques and told a more complex story- then Scott saw it and said "This is supposed to be Robin Hood!" and made it into another bland, cookie-cutter version of the same movie they've been making over and over since 1922.

I'm kind of dubious he'll do Napoleon justice.

If you do see it, let us know how it turns out. Also, whether they put Beethoven's third symphony in the soundtrack. I'm curious whether Scott is that brave.

I'm genuinely surprised they didn't make Napoleon into a black Muslim lesbian with daddy issues. Isn't that what Hollywood does now, turning characters (like Cleopatra) on their head and inside out?

Actually, it looks pretty good and I am a movie buff - especially historical movies. Besides, I always enjoy films about Corsican brigands who make good and start European wars.

Yes!.. the guy lost his touch and historical epics are quite extinct , Joaquin Phoenix feels the same in every movie.. but most movies are sh! t nowadays and it's NAPOLEON.. I'm such a simp for historical epics lol so I'll be watching it..

Looks good. Historical inaccuracies playing with demographics are very annoying in Hollywood. Many of those people are high on their own supply.

First they put Napoleon's mother, she wasn't present, secondly there is a black general, who is this general/marshal? There's also the scene where Napoleon rips the crown off the Pope is good, the Pope knew exactly what was going to happen, but they presented it as if the Pope was surprised, and the Pope speaks as if he were German lol
