Should Diane have gotten with Sam?

We do eventually see them get together after all that time of flirting and such, it was a horrible relationship, based on the fact that the other always wanted to be better than the other, which is simply not a good relationship. They still both did crave each other, at least sexually, but Diane didn't want to just be some lay for him, she wanted him to be with her again, even though thy had realized it wouldn't work. In the end of the Diane years, he winds up not getting back together with her, since they're writing her off anyway, but, in my opinion, they really should have never gotten together in the first place. The whole point of the show, with her originally was that she was supposed to be this "outsider", come in, and help keep Sam on the straight and narrow, as he was a recovering drunk. We mistook this as sexual and romantic attraction, which, while it was, that wasn't the intent of the story
