@islathewitch Something I love about Lynch's version is all the whispered voiceovers for inner monologues. Even though they don't reveal as much about the character's inner workings as I think they ideally could and were generally just used for exposition ("My name is a killing word," Paul thought), it gives the film a quality I usually only find in literature of actually being able to know exactly what the characters are thinking. I often wish more films did this even though it seems to be considered bad filmmaking for some reason.

Sin City is another one I liked in much the same way, generously using voiceovers to communicate the inner thoughts of each character. I find it gives a greater sense of intimacy with each character when we can literally read their minds.

@GuyAnswersGirls123 yes, the inner thoughts were very similar to how Herbert wrote his books. There were a lot of inner dialogues, thoughts, reflections, and retrospections. In the movie, it added an additional dimension and also an explanation for things that were not presented. I also like Jessica from Lynch's version more. She had this air of royalty there, exactly how Herbert described her.

Lynch's version was awfully cut off... but I love it the best of all Dune adaptations.

If you like to read, try Polish author Stanisław Lem. His books are futuristic, but what is more important is that he created characters full of inner thoughts and observations. Try "Tales of Pirx the Pilot", a set of stories about one guy, from the beginning of his career to the moment he achieved more than he has ever imagined. I love this book. I love how the character was created. As a normal person, without any outstanding traits. His thoughts, doubts, analyses... I read it every year lol

I love sci-fi so I'll definitely add him and "Tales of Pirx the Pilot" to my to-read list! One of my favorites is Nicolson Baker. He writes in a first person perspective that's deeply reflective and obsessively keen on observation of the most mundane aspects of life:

The Mezzanine is what made me fall in love with his writing style. It's also among the most extremely mundane of his books. The entire story is basically about an office worker's lunch break with the goal of purchasing a new pair of shoelaces. 😂

Also found a negative review of the book which I might use as a disclaimer. It actually highlights what I love about the book but it's definitely not for everyone!

And all these mundane things are described in excruciating detail. The kind of things that he discusses at length include why plastic straws are the way they are, what makes shoe laces wear out, the art of tying shoelaces, why it is better to cut a toast diagonally, staplers, milk cartons, garbage trucks and lot more. How to put on deodorant after he was fully dressed, shoe tying etc. count as life-changing lessons for him. There might have been some pieces that I found funny or interesting. I liked how the narrator would often re-visit his childhood days and build up on his thoughts from back then. In-spite of that it was just too tiring to read, even when I started skipping sentences. I can't help but wonder about the narrator's sanity. Such over-analysis of anything and everything can easily drive him crazy.

It does actually read like the musings of someone who is on the verge of insanity. 😂Yet it's what I love about his writing.
