What did I possibly see?

So I was younger looking at a star and it was dying in brightness and then it turned bright red and got real big and disappeared. I've waited for many years to hear from some intellectual about it... nothing. What do you all think? Did I just happen to witness the death of a star and it just wasn't picked up by anybody?

If a star went Nova it would put out a bright light and not fade from view for quite a while, depending on how far it was away of course. In fact, some nebula we see are the result of stars going nova long ago. Now, if a meteor was coming straight for your spot, you would probably see that and its final end, just like you see in a falling star from a distance. Only if it was coming straight at you then you wouldn't see a trail.

It faded out pretty quickly... I was yelling for other people to come see it and it was already done by the time other people came to see. It was like a red dot that just dimmer and dimmer after it got really bright red. I don't think it was a shooting star... I've seen so many of those that I think I'd know the difference. I first noticed it because it was just like the other stars, but it was twinkling way more than the others. Then it finally just turned red and swelled up... I thought it was going to eat the stars around it, it didn't though. It just dimmed out and turned into nothingness. It was just like a star... not moving and still. I've never seen anything like that before or since. Late 80's or maybe early 90's.

It was probably a meteor that was heading straight towards earth or at least where you were so there wasn't any tail visible on it

If I had to guess, Id say you observed the death of a star.

That's what I was thinking... but it was so quick. Documentaries I watch say it would take days and nothing like inside of a minute. I have no idea though. This was out in the desert by Edwards Airforce base, so for all I know it could've been one of the wacky things they test out there. I remember everybody thought those B-2 Bombers were aliens until Time magazine set us all straight. I still haven't seen a press release on those slow-moving silent triangles, but I'm pretty sure it was human-made as well. They always did weird shit... like jets that would make 6 sonic booms that was knocking televisions off the shelves... and we had those big hulking televisions back then and not the flat screens I can pick up by myself. That 6.9 earthquake, I seriously just thought it was the Jets going at night for some reason. The glass breaking is what freaked me out... I thought it was some hoodrat breaking in the place.
