What metric should the Oscars use to pick best movies?

Right now it’s a panel of producers, famous actors, etc. So insiders picking their faves. That may be good enough. I don’t know.

Should ticket sales be a metric? Movie critics?

The best metric is always numbers, they don’t lie. Obviously not every high-profit movie meets certain cinema standards, but films that are highly rated are made for a hyperspecific audience. I saw one such film, won a ton of film festival awards. The entire first half of the movie had no dialogue and more than a few incredibly long-times shots of the natural environment around the movie setting and it felt like the plot didn’t pick up until maybe 20 minutes were left. It was boring to someone who had no film education.


But at least profit numbers help determine which movies the public actually liked.

It’s an awards ceremony for their industry. They set the criteria which has been around for about 100 years. They know the art form and what takes special effort for acting, costume design etc. The best movie is their choice and most people don’t care too much as to what they pick pr why they pick it. A lot of times it is a choice that the general public doesn’t agree with and a lot of times they pick something that people don’t want to see. I still haven’t seen Parasite and many others.

Using ticket sales already is looked at as the most commercially successful so no need to use that metric. Best from an art form perspective doesn’t mean most liked. Even still, a lot of the Best Picture awards have been statement choices by what Hollywood deems as an important statement for the time it is in.
