They are both fine. "Waiting on" can also mean "serving", depending on context. "When I was young I used to wait on master and hand him his plate, and pass the bottle when he got dry, and brush away the blue-trail fly"

I think both are correct, and can be dependent on the subject’s presence. Waiting “on” implies that John is present while waiting “for” implies he is not.
