Suge Knight was this boss dude from Compton who started the whole Death Row Records label back in the 90s. He was a super imposing guy - huge and athletic as hell. Think he played football somewhere before gettin' in the music biz.

Anyways, Suge knew all the OGs from the 'Row - he was actually a card-carryin' Blood member himself. So he had all kinds connections to help blow up the artists he signed, like Dre, Snoop, and 2Pac. Dude also wasn't afraid to use force or threats to get what he wanted though. Like he'd beat dudes up in the parking lot if they looked at him wrong type energy and made dudes drink piss.

Suge helped make Death Row this huge powerhouse for a minute. But he also surrounded himself with fellow gangsters and encouraged all that gangsta image with the artists. Not sure he totally separated the business from the streets. Dude was livin large with all the hits they put out too.

Then it kinda all fell apart after Pac got shot in Vegas. Think Suge felt responsible or something. Went downhill from there with lawsuits and investigations. Last I heard he's still battling legal stuff in jail. Crazy how fast it can change up in the industry.

Suge wasn’t just running a record label. He was running an extortion racket, the same way that a gang or mafia would. And the cornerstone of any good extortion racket is intimidation.

Suge Knight wanted to create an environment that felt precarious and potentially dangerous in order to keep his artists in line. In layman’s terms, he wanted everybody shook - which is why he flaunted his gang ties to the Pirus and kept so many around him.

Using gangs as some kind of enforcer or insurance policy for his ego was a foolhardy move that accelerated Death Row's downfall by undermining the foundation of law-abiding and mutually-beneficial business it needed to thrive. Suge gained short-term influence but squandered much of the label's potential in the process.
