What are the biggest gaps in your pop-culture knowledge?

Was just answering another question and it made me think how out of the loop I am with general society on certain things. In other ways, I have all kinds of pop-culture knowledge.

But there’s some major stuff that I just don’t know anything about and have never been exposed to, or at most have just a surface-level recognition of them.

The one that prompted me to ask this question: coffee. I’ve never had it. Hot, iced, ice cream flavor…. I have no idea what coffee tastes like. I saw people being very dependent on it, the whole “don’t even talk to me in the morning before I’ve had my coffee!”, and I just didn’t want to make that part of the routine for myself. So I just never got into it…. but I feel like it makes me something of a weirdo when I tell people that, haha

Some other big ones:

-Disney (never seen the old cartoons or the movies like Lion King, etc)

-Star Wars (seen the originals, like 2x each)

-Lord Of The Rings

-Harry Potter

-Marvel Comics Universe

-The major action movie franchises of this century (aforementioned MCU, Fast & The Furious, Mission: Impossible, John Wick, Jason Bourne, Ocean’s Eleven, Deadpool, etc)

-Most reality television

-Popular music in the ‘10s and 20s, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Rihanna, almost all mumble rappers (or trap, or drill, whatever you call it now…I don’t know any of the guys with “A$ap” in their name, and I don’t know LiI Baby from DaBaby, haha)…I know these people exist, I know Beyoncé up through like ‘09, but more so the Destiny’s Child years, I hated that Single Ladies song SO MUCH, lmfao

-Country music…. I know a couple of names but couldn’t tell you a song. Heard one tearjerker a couple months ago but I already forgot who the singer is, haha. Some guy named Zach Bryan was selling out our biggest local venue, even returned for an extra show, and I couldn’t pick him out of a lineup. Looked up his biggest song, the one the crowd sings along with, and it was unbelievably mid, I was shocked.

Anyway, what are yours?

some are very similar...

- Disney Kids, Nickelodeon Kids... pretty much any TV show with kids, for kids I would usually not watch it

- Blockbusters and Sagas, franchises... most of them just didn't appeal to me,

- No Reality TV shows either... music I do listen to a whole of it, but I just don't really know about country, and in the last six years or so, I've noticed a disconnect with the "new music these kids are into" you know... if I seen a new "song" that fits in a 2:42 minutes video and the first 40 seconds are just credits and mumbling, or something spastic of edge, I don't even click on those anymore

- baseball... if baseball talk starts, I don't hear anything, I don't even register it, lol

- social media, I don't have any of it... I know all the names but not really how they really work, lol

I'm sure there's more... but the biggest WTF was coming to this site, and finding out about just how putrid there is in our minds because of the "online life" if it weren't for G@G and me joining during the pandemia, I would probably have not heard yet about a whole lot of nonsense that infests the minds of inadequate people... you know, all that alpha male bullshit, the manosphere... to keep it short, lol

a whole lot of the nonsense I see on this site, is just something I still, do not see or experience around here where I live, and by that I mean, actually going outside and live that life, outside, lol

oh yeah... and a lot of "Americana" pop-culture not only I grew up in two different worlds at the time, but also... the border really isn't the most "US American" place of all

so I didn't have older generations telling me "this is what America is" and so a lot of things the rest of you are very familiar with, I have to first, look it up... lol

especially, if it was on TV and old movies

I have never been a fan for the most part of mainstream entertainment. Every time people rave about something new in the pop music world, it always turns out to be the same old auto-tuned crud that gets churned out ad nauseam.

Not a single sip, Ms. Mandy. Love the smell of the beans, though. But the aversion to dependency plus my mom extinguishing her nasty ass cigarette butts in old cups of coffee (and I was on dishwashing detail🤢) when I was growing up…. coffee just wasn’t for me, haha

Interestingly, despite being deeply engaged in various forms of art and pop culture, I do have a few blind spots! I'm not very familiar with the gaming industry, and the esports world is a bit of a mystery to me. When it comes to sports, I might know iconic events or figures, but the day-to-day updates or match outcomes are often outside my radar. However, I'm fully immersed in the film, TV, music, anime, and festival scenes, and I thoroughly enjoy exploring art exhibitions! 🎨🎬
