I like Catcher in the Rye which follows a guy named Holden Caulfield who chronicles his day as he interacts with different characters in life. I do not agree with any of the opinions that he expressed about others, but I believe his observations are useful to understanding human behaviour.

"Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse. A beautiful story about a man's journey to enlightenment. But, beneath the simple surface, it's a richly complex work of art.
