It's the only way to be sure." - Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in "Aliens" (1986) That line has entered the nerd cultural lexicon. For instance, if you need to fix really bad software with lots of bugs and poor documentation, you might get exasperated and say that line because what you really want to do you believe would be easier is to get rid of that code entirely and start over rebuilding the needed software from scratch. Sometimes abbreviated "NFO" (nuke from orbit) or "NTFO" (nuke them from orbit). I remember when I saw "Aliens" in May or June 1986 and was blown away - partly because of the impact of that line. I understood the desperation and that, sometimes, that's what you need to do in life - instead of fucking around, you wipe the problem and then, maybe, start over. Like getting a divorce instead of working on saving an unsaveable marriage.

Believe it or not that is a real quote from a marine corps sergeant by the name of Dan Daly. They were in the trenches across from the German lines and they'd been holding for ages when Dan got sick of the waiting and went over the top of the trench by himself. Then he looked down in the trench at his men and he said. "Come on you sons of bitches! Do you wanna live forever?" And then he charged no man's land alone. He was so confidant his men charged behind him on sheer bad assery and broke the German lines.

That's the real history behind the movie quote. Goes a lot harder now doesn't it?

It's the opening soliloquy by Gunner Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. That was all done in one take and he had all the best lines in the movie.

Apparently R. Lee Emery was himself an actual Marine Staff Sergeant and used his experience to get the role of GS Hartman. Nothing like bringing real life into a movie.
