This has nothing to do with the film industry around the word because it only applies to American films and television produced in foreign countries.

Foreign film commissions are very competitive and offer extremely high tax incentives for American production, which would more than offset any tariff imposed, and they require that production companies hire primarily foreigners and not Americans, generally 90% to 95%. For this reason, foreign production has been disfavored for decades by rank and file Hollywood workforce and their unions as being destructive to their livelihood. Many American film workers spend much of their year on taxpayer-funded unemployment due to films being produced outside the U. S.

In any event people complaining about tariffs are too stupid to realize they are not intended to be permanent, but are a just negotiating tool to equalize the trade imbalance with the United States, and therefore will only be temporary, as we have already seen in other commercial and industrial sectors. In the unlikely event a country decides not to work with the U. S. to normalize trade between the two countries, then they deserve to lose American production business, which will only be a positive for Hollywood.

I think it will screw Hollywood the most. First of all they can't show their movies in China anymore which is like 40% of their box office on a lot of movies. Second Hollywood produces a lot of movies overseas and those are usually the better movies. Going on location like Jason Bourne for example that makes it a lot more interesting for the audience also they probably do it for financial reasons as well so now that will fall away.

Korea for example paid like a million bucks so the Avengers would shoot scenes in Seoul now they can't do that anymore because the tariff will ruin any benefit they get from it.

Also the money foreign movies actually make in the U. S. is not that high. The biggest Bollywood movies make like 5 million. I think the biggest anime movie I've seen made like 20 million in the U. S.(Demon Slayer) And Chinese movies also don't make much money in the U. S. Those movie industries are sustained by their own local audiences. They don't need foreign audiences. So they won't feel the pain that much. Sure it would be nice to get more money but if you take away the cut that the cinema makes these numbers are so low. So it will not hurt the foreign movie business much. But Hollywood NEEDS global audiences. Their revenue has been declining and declining anyway even without the tariffs. They're losing against streaming and video games and sports and live shows, everybody is taking away the Cinemas market share. They can't take much more.

I feel like the movie business in the U. S. is already in serious trouble needing to find some kind of new way to survive these additional challenges will just make the situation more severe.

It won’t affect the film industry around the world to me more than it will affect the USA’s movie industry.

Basically, movie theaters are going to hurt from this since a lot of people don’t like Hollywood Films to begin with. Now that Films can’t be made around the world in different settings with different cultures & scenery & atmosphere it is going to make less people want to go to the theaters.
It also stops films outside US from competing with American Made ones.

People will be less inclined to go wasting so much money at the theaters when it is boring, bland, a butchered retelling of what came before, and generally less quality than what audiences expect from Hollywood Films in the theater.

Maybe there is another aspect I’m missing entirely, that is what I view from a surface level.
